Social Media – Why people grow their follower numbers and how they benefit?

I have been wanting to express some thoughts on Social Media, why influencers treat their handles like this is why they were born. Do they really make money acquiring followers? Or is this more to do with the feeling of being a celebrity or being popular?

I have tried to discuss various factors that make people want to be popular on Social Media and why businesses and professionals need to have a following.
